Discovery
in Countesthorpe
Discovery
is a national Christian youth organisation based in Birmingham.
The Countesthorpe team has been in operation since September
2001 and is involved at Leysland High School and Countesthorpe
community College. We also work closely with the local community, St Andrews church and other local churches.
Matt
and Gemma Brown lead the team and this year have been joined
by Charlotte Carpenter and Chris Mooney. There are also around 15 local
volunteers on the team. As well as leading the team, Matt is
also a Comminuty Govenor at Leysland High School..
Matt
writes,
"We are involved in R.E. lessons and assemblies for all year
groups at the two schools. Covering topics such as suffering,
the environment, parables, good and evil, choices and the life
of Jesus.
There is now a discovery group running at Leysland High School on Thursdays after school for Christian students and those who want to find out more. There is a similar group during Wednesday lunchtimes in the college for those interested in finding out more about Christianity. In addition to this we run two more groups at the college. On Monday lunchtimes we run IMPACT for Christian students to support and encourage one another and Friday lunch times is our weekly prayer meeting called Passion, lead by theyoung people themselves.
As well schools based work, we are also involved in working in the community as well as working with the church youth groups (gen:x & x-change) we also run 3 events in partnership with St. Andrews church. N.counter is a monthly cyber cafe for young people on Friday evenings. Innovate is our bi-monthly youth event held on Saturday evenings and After Hours is a youth worship evening which takes place bi-monthly between Innovate on Sunday evenings.
Alongside this we work with young people in small groups and on an individual basis as the need arises, working on a whole variety of issues.
